Structural mounting
Shades are only as solid as what they mount to. Identify where the housing will attach — beam, fascia, header or wall — and whether that surface is sound. Your installer should confirm the mounting surface before ordering.
Measure the exact clear openings
Your own tape measurements are useful for planning, but they should not be what the shades are built from. Openings are rarely perfectly square. The installer should take final measurements of each clear opening before anything is ordered.
Look for obstacles
Walk each opening and note anything in the shade's path.
- Light fixtures, fans, misters and speakers
- Gutters, downspouts and drip edges
- Railings, knee walls and planters
- Furniture or grills that sit in the drop zone
Level and plumb
Beams and posts that are out of level or plumb can leave visible gaps or uneven bottoms. Ask your installer how they will handle any variation in your structure.
Power planning
Decide early where power will come from and where controls will live. Confirm who handles any electrical work and how wiring will be routed so it looks clean.
HOA and permit checks
Many Arizona neighborhoods have HOA guidelines for exterior changes such as colors or visible additions. Check your HOA's requirements, and ask your installer or local jurisdiction whether anything about your project needs a permit. Rules vary by community and city.
Wind operation
Outdoor shades should be operated according to the manufacturer's instructions, including when to raise them in high wind. Ask how your specific product should be used during monsoon season and storms.
Privacy: day versus night
Shade fabrics usually give more privacy during the day, when it is brighter outside. At night, with lights on inside the patio, people outside may be able to see in. If nighttime privacy matters, discuss fabric choice with that in mind.
Access for service
Motors and housings may need service someday. Make sure the housing stays accessible and is not boxed in by trim, plants or later additions, and keep a record of who to call.
