Do exterior patio shades need HOA approval?
Usually, yes. Exterior roll shades change how the back of the home looks, so most community guidelines treat them as an exterior modification that needs written approval from the architectural or design review committee before installation. Some communities group roll shades with awnings as semi-permanent structures.
The only reliable answer for your home is your own community's CC&Rs and design guidelines. Most HOAs post them on the community website or the management company's portal. If you can't find them, ask your management company for the architectural guidelines and the current application form. Not every home is in an HOA; if yours isn't, you can skip this step.
What to include in your application
A complete application is the fastest path to a yes. Most committees ask for some version of the following:
After your free in-home measure, ProTech Home gives you the product details, fabric color options, dimensions and a written scope you can attach to your request. Our Arizona ROC license number is 368133.
- Your community's architectural or design review application form, filled out and signed
- Product description: manufacturer, product type (exterior motorized roll shade) and fabric line
- Fabric color name and a sample or color photo, plus the housing and bottom bar color
- Photos of each patio opening, with the shade locations marked
- Approximate width and height of each shade
- Where the shade mounts (for example, inside the patio beam or fascia) and how visible the housing will be
- Contractor name and Arizona ROC license number
Rules that come up most often
Guidelines differ by community, but a few themes show up again and again in East Valley design rules.
As one published example, The Islands Community Association in Gilbert requires solid colors for awnings and roll shades, requires roll shades used to screen a patio to be mounted on the inside of the fascia board in a neutral color, and asks applicants to name the manufacturer, color and material and to provide a material sample. Your community's rules may be stricter or looser, so always check your own documents.
- Color: neutral or solid fabric colors that coordinate with the home; patterns and bright colors are often not allowed
- Mounting: shades set within the patio structure, often inside the fascia or beam, so the housing isn't prominent
- Upkeep: faded or torn fabric has to be repaired or replaced
- Visibility: openings that can be seen from the street or common areas may get a closer look
How long approval takes
Review timelines come from your community's own documents, not one statewide deadline. Many committees review on a set schedule, so a complete application sent in before the next review date is the quickest route. Missing details are the most common reason for delays.
Arizona's planned community statute (A.R.S. 33-1817) requires a design or architectural committee to include at least one board member as its chair, and says approval of a project's architectural designs and plans shall not be unreasonably withheld. This guide is general information, not legal advice. For questions about your rights, read your CC&Rs or talk to an attorney.
Gilbert, Queen Creek and nearby cities
Gilbert: much of the town is master-planned with active HOAs and published design guidelines, so plan on needing approval. Shades on a west- or south-facing rear patio are the most common request, and color and mounting are what reviewers look at most.
Queen Creek: many newer communities have design guidelines for exterior additions, and long rear patios often mean several openings on one application. Ask for all of them at once so you don't submit twice.
Chandler, Mesa, San Tan Valley and Apache Junction: the same steps apply to any home in an HOA.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need HOA approval for patio shades in Gilbert?
In most Gilbert HOA communities, yes. Exterior roll shades are usually treated as an exterior modification that needs written approval before installation. Check your CC&Rs and design guidelines to confirm.
Do I need HOA approval for patio shades in Queen Creek?
If your home is in an HOA, usually yes. Many Queen Creek communities have design guidelines for exterior additions. If your property isn't in an HOA, this step doesn't apply.
What color patio shades will my HOA approve?
It depends on your community, but neutral, solid colors that coordinate with the home are the most commonly accepted. Have your guidelines handy at the in-home visit and we'll show you fabric colors that fit them.
Can I install shades first and ask for approval later?
That's risky. Many guidelines require approval before work starts, and an HOA can require changes to, or removal of, unapproved exterior additions. Get written approval first.
